508 Compliance Template and Checklist
In order to adhere to the Federal government's 508 compliance guidelines to accomodate persons with disabilities, we ask that you please use the PowerPoint template and checklist below to develop your 2010 JMATE presentation.

You can use your own version/template, but should:

  • Ensure that there is at least 80% contrast between background and text for people with visual impairment. Examples of things that are ok: white/yellow on dark blue; black on white/yellow/light green/light blue. Examples of things that are not ok: yellow on light blue/light green; black on green
  • All tables need to have column and row labels and avoid or minimize nesting

  • All figures have to have labels on each axis

  • Add alternative text that can be read by text readers to all images, pictures and other non text items giving a short description of what they are. To do this, right-click the non-text object, click Format, click the Web tab and enter the alternative text for this object.  Imagine describing the object to someone over the telephone. Enter how you would describe it.

  • Avoid media files (they will not convert). Such files can have alternative text, but ideally would have captions to be read see http://webaim.org/techniques/captions/ for the deaf and hard of hearing as well. Avoid flashing, blinking and movement of text that is not necessary.
